From Sierra Leone to Self-Discovery: The Power of Knowing Where You Come From

As we close out the month of July, I want to take a moment to reflect on the very beginning of Tu Success! A Journey from Pain to Purpose—a story rooted in legacy, loss, and identity.

Chapter 1: A Man Named Murray Kallon takes us back to my childhood in Bo, Sierra Leone. Born into the well-respected Fofana family, my early life was shaped by cultural tradition and strict expectations. While we were provided for and educated in the best schools, what we lacked was deeper—emotional presence and affirmation, especially from my father.

Though I knew who he was, the truth of our relationship was never spoken aloud. His absence left a void, a question mark that followed me through my most formative years. That yearning for paternal love, the desire to be acknowledged, quietly influenced so many of my decisions as I grew up and entered adulthood.
It wasn’t until I was 30 years old and living in America that my mother finally confirmed that Murray Kallon was my father—just after telling me he had passed away. That moment broke me and healed me at the same time. The pain of never truly knowing him finally collided with the truth I had always carried in my heart.

This chapter is more than a backstory—it’s a mirror for so many who grow up wondering why certain love is absent, or why some truths remain unspoken. It’s a reminder that our beginnings don’t define our end, but they certainly shape the journey.

To every woman who has ever felt abandoned, misunderstood, or silenced—your voice matters, and your story deserves to be told.
As I continue to share my journey this year through each chapter of Tu Success!, I invite you to reflect on your own roots, your own truth, and the pain you’ve turned into purpose.

With love,
Mariatu Tu Browne
